Sclerotization: Instructions

12.10.2023

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that is recommended if you suffer from microvessels, i.e. smaller red or blue veins with a diameter of 1-4 mm. The treatment consists of injecting a special substance directly into the vein with a thin needle. The vein is chemically destroyed from the inside and then absorbed by your body. Sclerotherapy is used as an additional procedure during or after surgery. If the client has an isolated disability, only sclerotisation is performed, followed by a recommendation to wear elastic medical stockings of compression class II for a period of time that is determined individually according to the extent. Sclerotisation is also a procedure that is recommended to prevent further varicose enlargement.

Preoperative instructions

No special preparation is required before the procedure.

Before the procedure, it is necessary to notice a darker drawing in the place of small veins. Its cause is pigmentation from pathological veins. It should be taken into account that this drawing will temporarily become more pronounced after sclerotization, but later it will disappear. This process is always dependent on the individual healing capacity. It should be considered in advance that sometimes these pigmentations can persist for a long time and sometimes they never disappear.

When the sclerosing solution is applied, the patient may experience a sensation of warmth, mild tenderness, burning or soreness at the site of application of the sclerosing agent. After the procedure, there is transient swelling and redness at the injection site, which usually disappears within 3 days after application.

Sometimes the puncture may heal poorly and necrosis (death) of the circumscribed area of the skin may occur, followed by small ulcers, redness, swelling or suppuration, the manifestations then heal for several weeks by scarring, in which case it is recommended to shower the site with lukewarm water and apply Betadine ointment. After soothing it is possible to apply a hydrocolloid patch or Hemagel.
