Phlebectomy: Preoperative instructions

12.10.2023

The phlebectomy method is a minimally invasive method that gently removes the affected veins of the lower limbs - venous connections and varices. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, without the need for general anaesthesia and without the need for incapacity for work.

Preoperative instructions

No special preparation is required before the procedure, no fasting is necessary, no pre-operative examination is required. Wear loose pants or a longer skirt for the procedure. If you have more body hair, it is advisable to shave the groin and varicose areas. Drink plenty of fluids before the procedure.

The injection site will first be numbed using local anaesthesia. Then, local anesthesia will be performed over the varixes or adhesions. The protruding varixes will be directly removed from the tiny individual punctures. You may experience mild pain, pulling or pinching during the procedure, especially when the anaesthetic (numbing) is applied.

On the day of surgery, leave the bandages on the limbs, in the evening remove only the elastic bandages and leave the stockings overnight. In the morning, you can pull down the stockings and remove the larger pads. Leave the plasters on the skin and do not soak, wash around with a washcloth. Put the stockings back on. After 3 days you can remove the patches. From the day of the procedure for 7 days, compression stockings must be worn 24 hours a day. After that, it is recommended to wear the stockings only in the daytime for a week. From the 7th day onwards, you can apply recommended creams or gels against swelling and bruising to the bruises twice a day. Avoid heavy exertion and sports activities for 2 weeks after the operation, in the following period it is possible to gradually start sports. Regular walking is important for recovery. You will be seen for a follow-up after 5-10 days to have the stitches removed. No diet is necessary after the procedure. Follow the recommendations of the attending physician.

Please attend the performance on the agreed date and time. In case of analgosedation, it is not possible to drive motor vehicles after the procedure, choose an escorted ride to the procedure.
