Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis - blood tests

Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis have the same vector - the common tick. There are more and more ticks in nature and the number of tick-borne infections is increasing. Both diseases affect the nervous system and initially resemble the flu. Both can also cause permanent damage to patients. However, the symptoms and other specifics differ.

Encephalitis is of viral origin and the first signs of infection appear after 3-5 days. There is no targeted treatment; protection can only be obtained by vaccination followed by regular re-vaccination, which should be given approximately once every five years.

Borreliosis is of bacterial origin and may not become apparent until a month after infection. It is treated with antibiotics and there is no vaccination yet. It is much more insidious because it can have an individual course and may not make itself known for several months or years.

The test is for people who have been bitten by a tick, especially if the person shows symptoms of Lyme disease such as a target-shaped rash, fatigue, joint pain, fever, and neurological symptoms. The antibody test is also used to verify the effectiveness of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccination.

The tick-borne encephalitis test is a laboratory test used to detect IgG and IgM antibodies to tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in the blood. IgG antibodies are produced in the body several weeks after infection or vaccination and their presence indicates that the infection has been passed or that immunity to the virus has developed.

The presence of IgM antibodies in the blood is crucial for the diagnosis of the acute phase of tick-borne encephalitis. These antibodies usually appear shortly after the onset of symptoms and may be detectable for several weeks to months. The test can also verify the effectiveness of the vaccination.

IgG antibodies are produced in the body several weeks after infection or vaccination and their presence indicates that the infection has been passed or that immunity to the virus has been established.

The Borrelia IgG, IgM antigen test is designed to detect IgG and IgM antibodies against the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

The presence of IgM antibodies may indicate a recent infection, while IgG antibodies may remain in the body for a long time and indicate a past or ongoing infection.

The test result will tell you whether you have:

  • IgG and IgM antibodies to tick-borne encephalitis
  • Borrelia IgG and IgM antibodies
